Garbage is transported by a large compactor at two tons at a time, from the refuse pit to a boiler where it is burned for energy at the Shady Hills plant. Pasco county's trash-to-energy plant will operate at least until the end of 2024. This action will effectively end the debate about whether to pursue the controversial landfill in Dade City or elsewhere in the county.
